What is Gallery-Wrapped Canvas?

I say that all of my paintings are painted on gallery-wrapped canvas, but what the heck is that, you ask?

Gallery-wrapped canvas is canvas that is wrapped around wooden stretcher bars and stapled to the back. It doesn’t have any visible staples holding the canvas to the stretcher bars, thus giving a finished look so that the painting can be hung unframed (you can also frame it, if you like!)

See how the canvas goes around the wooden frame, without any visible staples? That is gallery-wrapped canvas!

Sunny Red Balcony in Whitewashed Mediterranean Village

I’d been thinking I wanted to paint something with a pop of red color in it, and so I’ve been using my artistic eye to take photos of things to paint for the past couple weeks.

I also went through some photos I already had, and came across one that I took in Ibiza. The shutter and door colors in the original photo are green, so I decided to switch them to red in the painting.

Voila!

Throwback Thursday Peace Corps Art & Auctions Ending Soon

Current Work and Auctions Ending Soon

For much of this week and next, I’m working on a large oil painting of a vintage red tractor for a local art competition. This Sunday, however, I should still have another new painting up for auction on eBay. I have a few ideas for what I’ll be painting, but whatever I decide, it will be a nice pop of red color!

In the meantime, tonight an eBay auction is ending for an 8″ x 10″ oil painting of blooming spring flowers hanging along the Potomac River.

Throwback Thursday Art

The other day I was thinking that I have a fairly extensive body of work from the past several years, and I’m going to start sharing bits of it every Thursday on my Facebook fan page, on my Twitter page, and right here on this blog!

As many of you know, from 2006 to 2008, I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural Costa Rica, working in Community Economic Development. In my spare time (there’s plenty of spare time in rural Costa Rica), I enjoyed, you guessed it, painting.

Over the course of a few months, I sketched and painted a detailed world map onto the side of the local elementary school, where I taught Junior Achievement and English, and was a soccer star (until I played with other adults). The map had every single country on it, with the names in Spanish, as well as some inspirational quotes on the sides.

The quotes read (translated):

“The more we know the world, the more we love it.”

“The Earth is ours, let’s take care of it!”

“Almost always, the creative and dedicated minority has made the world a better place.”

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”

Once the map was finished, we used it to teach geography through trivia games. The kids really enjoyed it. Most of them learned a lot, although one boy already knew the name of every single country in the world, where they were located, and some information about each country! He showed me his book one day that he studied to learn all of that. It was pretty impressive.

Since then, the school built an additional room, which enclosed the map inside.

We definitely had a good time at the school, both learning:

and having fun!

Lastly, I recently donated to the National Peace Corps Association and got this cool bumper sticker artwork to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps!

Art Trivia – Canvases

Can you name the two different canvas materials that artists use to paint on?

Drum roll…..

And the answer is:

Cotton and Linen.

Dick Blick Cotton Canvas utrecht linen canvas

Did you know that? I know that this is common knowledge among artists, but have wondered before whether your average person knows this!

Cotton canvases are made from, duh, cotton, and linen canvases are made from the flax plant. While the quality of the canvas can vary widely between manufacturers, both are suitable surfaces to paint on.

For a majority of my paintings, I paint on high quality cotton canvases. For portrait paintings, I prefer to use linen, since I can get a very smooth linen surface to make sure facial details are accurate.

Painting of Playa Santa, Puerto Rico

Playa Santa, Puerto Rico

Boy was it an adventure to get here. Playa Santa, literally translated as “Holy Beach”, lies somewhere along the southwestern coastline of Puerto Rico.

During our vacation in Puerto Rico, we stayed in San Juan and rented a car to drive around the island. After passing through the southern city of Ponce, we kept driving west and stopped at a gas station. I asked if there were any local beaches they’d recommend, and the guy gave some loose directions to get to one.

Relying on a mix of his directions and the usually-correct-but-not-always compass in my head, we drove through several country dirt roads before finally coming to this beach, named Playa Santa. It was a hidden gem!

Morning on the Beach in Corcovado

The scene in this painting is of wild and tropical Corcovado, Costa Rica. Located on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Corcovado National Park contains the most biodiversity in the Western hemisphere!

While a Peace Corps Volunteer in Costa Rica, I got to hike through Corcovado near the end of my service.

Enjoy the cool morning colors of this tropical location hanging on your home or office wall!
